A possible challenge with a planning a Jamaica villa vacation is how to keep the whole group happy. One area of concern sometimes centers around the bedrooms … How to decide who gets which room when you rent a Jamaica villa. This may seem trifling; but, friendships have been ruined over less serious issues.
HOT TIP! Choose a villa with equal or fairly equal bedrooms so that no one will feel short- changed.
Hopefully, the villa you select will have a floor plan as well as pictures and descriptions of all the bedrooms so that you can have a rough idea of the size and quality of the rooms ahead of time.
Our rooms are more or less equal with two exceptions – the master bedroom (Sweet Mais Oui) and the Papaya Loft.
Sweet Mais Oui has a very large main bedroom with a grand bathroom housing double sinks, separate shower, large whirlpool bath and private powder room. Additionally, there is an adjoining bedroom with a full-sized bed making it ideal for parents who want to be close to, but separate from, their children. The group leader, who is usually the person who plans the trip, pays for the trip and or signs the rental agreement usually chooses the master bedroom as a treat for planning the experience.
The Papaya loft has 2 bedrooms with a shared bath. As long as there are no more than 3 adults who will need the Papaya Loft, the small bedroom in that space becomes a non-issue. Like Sweet Mais Oui, this space is ideal for parents traveling with children. We let our guests know ahead of time, that the 8th bedroom, from the Papaya Loft, is small, has a full-sized bed, and so is not designed for couples.
Rooms don’t have to be equal for a villa to be great. What is important is that your group is aware of the room configurations before-hand so that you know what to expect and plan for it. There is no point in having 4 couples show up at a 4 bedroom villa where one bedroom has two bunk beds!
Here are 7 questions to ask to try to figure out just how “equal” the bedrooms are in the villa that you are renting.
- Do some rooms have a shower only in the bathroom while others have shower – tub combinations? Do you care about that?
- Do some rooms have air-conditioning while others don’t?
- Do some rooms have televisions while others don’t?
- Do some rooms have double or single beds while others have kings? Note that there are ways to seamless convert two twin beds to extremely comfortable king beds!
- Do some rooms share a bath while others have private baths?
- Do some rooms have great views while other rooms look out to a garden with half-dead plants?
- Do the rooms have roughly the same relative square footage?
If you are staying at a villa where the rooms are clearly not equal and group members are all contributing to the trip, you’ll need some way to assign rooms fairly and keep everyone happy.
Any difference in price breakdown that is being considered should happen before you start the trip so that talk of money doesn’t make anyone uncomfortable during the vacation.
Remember no one wants the short end of the stick. At the end of the trip, everyone should be happy. The last thing you want is for someone in your group to feel that he or she was treated unfairly and may not want to vacation with you again. The bottom line is that people simply want to feel that they got a fair deal – especially if they are contributing to the cost.
