- Try to stay to least a week. This gives you the most bang for your buck. Shorter stays often cost you more per night than if you rent for longer periods.
- Make sure you have a local contact person to help you in case you run into any problems. You don’t want to spend your time trying to solve problems in a foreign country.
- Communicate, communicate, communicate with your staff. Tell them what you want. They are there to help you. If you do not communicate with them they have no way of knowing what you want or what your likes and dislikes are. Sure, they will pay attention to your actions and reactions but why make them try to be mind-readers?! What a waste of time and energy.
- Make sure the members of your group are all on the same page. This will prevent mixed messages to the staff. If some members of your group want to be frugal but others want to eat like royalty, this will create confusion and frustration for the staff. They won’t know to whom they should listen. Confused and frustrated staff and guests … not a good combination.
- Unless you know you don’t want to go our much, get a van and driver service. This is the most comfortable and reliable way of seeing the sights. Even if you don’t book your activities ahead of time, at least think about what you would like to do so you don’t waste the greater part of each day trying to figure out where you’d like to go.
- Make sure you pick a villa that is ideal for your group in the first place. Be sure to consider your group’s size, configuration and desired amenities. If you are not happy with the property you selected, it will be hard to salvage the vacation.
- Try to get close to the maximum occupancy of the house to end up with the best per person price. It is simple mathematics. The larger your group size, the lower the per person cost to rent a villa. Remember hotels are based on a per room rate. Villa rentals are to some extent based on a room rate but in reality are more based on the price of a nightly rate for the house. Please respect the terms of your rental agreement and not exceed the number of stated guests … It’s just bad etiquette.
- Make sure you consider the other costs associated with your vacation so you don’t spend too much money on an expensive villa and then don’t have enough money to eat well or to make a few splurges that you may want.
- Go with a laid back attitude. Go with the flow. It is conducive to vacation living and conducive to the island way of life. Appreciate the differences between the way things are back home versus in Jamaica. That is part of the travel experience. Savor your time with friends and family.
