Beach weddings in Jamaica – Are you sure you really want a wedding on the beach

Beach weddings in Jamaica are beautiful but can bring their own special challenges.

At first blush, a beach wedding might seem like a no-brainer.

If you are going to the Caribbean, why would you not want to have your wedding right on the beach? After all, pick up any magazine with pictures of destination weddings in Jamaica or the Caribbean and there is the obligatory picture of a wedding set up on the beach.

Hint:  You are already going against tradition by having a destination wedding so why go with the stereotypical image of a beach wedding? Do something different. Do what represents you. Think beyond the beach. Don’t limit yourself. Here are 9 reasons to think about this differently (or at least consider some of the less spoken about details).

9 things to think about if you are exploring beach weddings in Jamaica

1.  Dealing with sand at beach weddings in Jamaica can be a royal pain.

It might be fun to feel the sand between your toes when you are spending a day at the beach but chances are you won’t feel that way when you are dressed for a wedding.

Sand is the enemy of high heels and wheelchairs. Warn your guests not to wear high heels as it will be a challenge walking in the sand. If anyone in your group is in a wheelchair, getting through the sand is a major deal.

2.  The sound of the sea can be loud.

Unless you are having a very small wedding, your guests beyond your bridal party, probably will not be able to hear you take your vows. Think about that and plan for it.

3.  Where’s the power?

Rethink any idea that requires electricity on the beach, unless you want to hire a portable generator. Usually, there are no electrical outlets on or near the beach. People often don’t think about that.

4.  Wind can wreak havoc.

Some places can get windy if you are directly on the beach. Wind blowing sand in the face, eyes, and mouth is not fun. Also, think about your hairstyle. Loose long hair at the beach often means hair that is blowing in the wind. March and April can sometimes be windy depending on where you are on the island. Be sure to ask about wind before you decide on the wedding location.

5.  Where’s the beach?

The tide can change the amount of land space that is available at the beach. Make sure your planner is familiar enough with the location to know if this will be a problem. Check out this website showing the tide times in Jamaica.

6.  Mind the sun.

True, the sun, sea, and sand might be part of why you’re thinking of beach weddings in Jamaica but be sun smart.

There is usually very little shade on the beach. It can be hot, very hot, sitting out in the sun. You don’t want your guests boiling in the heat. So, pick the time of day for the wedding carefully. Start on time. Hopefully, the wedding officiant will keep the ceremony short. Be sure to wear sunscreen.

7.  Where’s the john?

It may sound like fun to get married on a deserted beach but do make sure there are bathroom facilities close by.

I’ve seen some sites offering “luxury port-a-johns” – an oxymoron if you ask my opinion. Please, pick a place near nice restrooms. You want your wedding to be memorable for more pleasant reasons.

8. Be prepared to give up some privacy.

Unless you are on a “private” beach, you can expect some privacy issues. There will be gawkers. Who doesn’t love to see a beautiful bride? People can’t help staring at a wedding party.

9. Don’t forget to check the weather.

Locals say a little rain on your wedding day is a blessing but you probably won’t feel that way if it rains on your setup for your beach wedding. The good news is that showers in Jamaica tend to be quick.

Think through these 9 possible beach wedding headaches and you will be one step ahead of the game.

Ready to consider a wedding other than on the beach?

6 destination wedding location options to consider besides beach weddings in Jamaica

1.  Beside a gorgeous waterfall

With over 120 rivers, Jamaica has many waterfalls. Dunns River is the most famous but there are many others.

2.  In a beautiful garden

With its diverse foliage, Jamaica has tons of gardens, some public, some private.

3.  On a serene mountaintop

Jamaica’s terrain offers both mountains and plains. You could choose a location high in the hills, maybe even with an ocean view.

4.  In a church

If you are very traditional, you could get married in a church. Rumor has it that Jamaica has more churches per square mile than anywhere else in the world.

5.  In a banquet hall

You could choose to get married indoors. You’ll have no need to worry about rain and you will have air conditioning.

6.  At a private villa
